چکیده

This paper presents a systematic diagnostic approach towards the characterization of herbicide resistance in a given weed population with regards to profile (single, multiple, cross resistance), magnitude (fold level), mechanism, and related bio-physiological aspects. Diagnosing herbicideresistant weeds can be achieved by crafting robust procedures for seed sampling, survey protocol and seed collection, seed processing and storage, germination, emergence and growth (sufficient number of representative plants), treatment conditions (i.e., discriminating dose, adjuvants, spray volume and parameters, water quality, and nutrient status), experimental design, appropriate controls including wild type/susceptible accessions, and biological parameters being measured. Understanding the processes and means by which weeds withstand labeled herbicide treatments is an important step, as well, towards devising effective herbicide resistance management strategies. Several physiological, biochemical, and molecular approaches for studying resistance mechanisms are available to researchers. The various omics approaches including genomics (DNA), transcriptomics (RNA), proteomics (proteins), and metabolomics (metabolites) will revolutionize herbicide resistance research.

HRAC Classification of Herbicides and Resistance Development

The first cases of herbicide resistance were reported around 1970. Since then resistance of monoand dicotyledonous weeds to herbicides has become an increasing problem world-wide. In March 2006 the International Survey of Herbicide-Resistant Weeds recorded 305 herbicide-resistant biotypes with 182 weed species – 109 dicotyledonous and 73 monocotyledonous weeds [1]. The relatively steady increas...

Non-target-site Mechanisms of Herbicide Resistance – Changes for Weed Management

Weed scientists generally have done an excellent job of documenting herbicideresistant weeds. Over 400 unique cases of herbicide resistance, involving over 200 weed species in 65 countries, have been reported (Heap 2014). Oftentimes, evolved resistance in weeds is due to a mutation in a gene encoding the herbicide target site, and weed scientists also have done a good job of identifying these m...

Evolution of herbicide resistance mechanisms in grass weeds.

Herbicide resistant weeds are becoming increasingly common, threatening global food security. Here, we present BrIFAR: a new model system for the functional study of mechanisms of herbicide resistance in grass weeds. We have developed a large collection of Brachypodium accessions, the BrI collection, representing a wide range of habitats. Wide screening of the responses of the accessions to fou...

How plants survive glyphosate

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the world for several reasons, including: 1) high level of effectiveness, 2) flexibility in application, 3) large margin of crop safety in glyphosate resistant crops, and 4) safety to applicators and the environment. Glyphosate was used for more than 20 years before weeds developed resistance to the chemical. This relative low risk of glyphosate r...

Investigating The Genetic Resistance of Some Iranian Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Cultivars to Pursuit Herbicide

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important crops in the world. After bean and pea, chickpea is the most important cold season legume. Weeds are one of the most important threats to chickpea production worldwide. Due to the sensitivity of chickpea to herbicides, the majority of herbicides are used pre-emergence and the use of post-emergence herbicides is limited, and therefore we...
